Happy Mask Salesman

You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?

— The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask ‧ 2000

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a polite greeting that lands as a diagnosis. The Salesman says it with the fixed smile and the odd courtesy that make him unsettling, and he is the one person in Termina who seems to know exactly what has happened to you. Fans quote it deadpan to anyone whose day has gone wrong, which is why it is one of the best-loved lines in the whole series.

In The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (Nintendo, Nintendo 64, 2000), Link arrives in the land of Termina chasing the Skull Kid, who steals his ocarina and turns him into a Deku Scrub. Link and the fairy Tatl reach the Clock Tower, where the Happy Mask Salesman, who has been following him, greets him with this line and offers a way back to his own form. First Link must recover the ocarina from Skull Kid, and the Salesman also asks him to return the precious mask Skull Kid stole from him within three days. Fans count it among the series' most iconic quotes.
