Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It reads like machine boilerplate, which is what makes it land: a 40-ton war machine reciting a rule list as if it were all there is to him. By the end the list has become a love story in the guise of a manual, because Protocol 3 is the one BT keeps choosing over the others. Fans quote the full set as a mark of loyalty, and Titanfall 2's pilot-and-Titan friendship is routinely ranked among the best in shooters.

Spoilers for Titanfall 2Show the scene

In Titanfall 2 (Respawn Entertainment, October 28, 2016), Militia rifleman Jack Cooper is thrown onto the planet Typhon when his fleet is shot down, and the dying Captain Tai Lastimosa passes him control of his Vanguard-class Titan, BT-7274. BT, voiced by Glenn Steinbaum, is bound to three protocols: link to the pilot, uphold the mission, and protect the pilot. They recur all through the campaign as the standard by which BT judges every choice, and the third, protecting Cooper, drives his final act in the game.
