Godlike!

— Unreal Tournament ‧ 1999

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line is a medal and a threat in one word: you are so far ahead that the server has stopped pretending it is a fair fight. Because the whole server hears it, 'Godlike' doubles as a taunt, and it became the standard English label for an untouchable streak in shooters and arena games that came after.

Spoilers for Unreal TournamentShow the scene

In Unreal Tournament (1999), "Godlike!" is the announcer's call for the top of the killing-spree ladder. The sprees count kills without dying: killing spree at five frags, rampage at ten, dominating at fifteen, unstoppable at twenty, and godlike at twenty-five. The level is announced to the other players as well, so the whole server hears the line when someone reaches it, and the spree resets if you are killed. Later Unreal games kept Godlike near the top but moved the thresholds and added extra ranks above it.
