A 1950s diner with red stools and a jukebox: a big bully in a black jacket, his three grinning henchmen behind him, knocks his knuckles on the head of a skinny bespectacled boy bent over his homework at the counter, as a teenager in an orange body-warmer watches.

Biff

Hello? Hello? Anybody home? Think, McFly. Think!

— Back to the Future • 1985

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It sums up how Biff treats George for thirty years, and why the punch that finally floors him is so satisfying. The knock on the head is easy to mimic, so the phrase escaped the film as a way of telling anyone to wake up and think.

Spoilers for Back to the FutureShow the scene

Back to the Future, 1985. Biff Tannen knuckle-knocks on the head of his victim as if on a door. It happens first in 1985, at the McFly house, after Biff has wrecked George McFly's car and George hasn't finished retyping Biff's work reports. It returns in 1955, in Lou's coffee shop, over George's homework, with Marty watching. A version of the line was also used as a tagline for the film.
