Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

This is Shuri's first big laugh, and it borrows a catchphrase the internet already loved to tease a king. That tells us at once that the brother and sister can mock each other, and that Wakanda's genius has a sense of humour. Fans lifted it straight out of the film and into gifs and memes, and it is the line people often quote when Shuri comes up.

The joke comes early in Black Panther (2018), when T'Challa visits his sister Shuri in her lab before the mission to Korea. He shows off the sandals he wore on his first day as king, and Shuri spots his bare toes and shouts for him to explain what those are. He asks if she does not like his royal sandals. She then hands him shoes of her own design, fully automated and compared to a film their father used to watch, and tells him to try them on. The scene establishes their teasing friendship.
