Dead Poets Society (1989) gave classrooms their modern liturgy: 'Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys' and 'O Captain! My Captain!' -- the latter borrowed from Walt Whitman's elegy for Abraham Lincoln, which the film repurposes as a student salute. Robin Williams improvised around Tom Schulman's Oscar-winning script, but the desk-standing finale was scripted exactly as filmed.
