Oh, I’m sorry I can’t come to the door right now. I feel that in my weakened condition I could take a nasty spill down the stairs and subject myself to further school absences.

What it means
Our interpretation.
The speaker offers an elaborately courteous excuse for not answering the door, citing a frail state and the risk of tumbling down the stairs. The exaggerated concern is built to sound reasonable, and its worry about missing more school reads as a dodge.
