Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The innuendo name was the joke the whole series built on, and Connery's Bond answers it with a raised eyebrow rather than a laugh. It sums up the 1960s formula: a pun for a name, a playboy's one-line reply, a villain's pilot who will turn out to be nobody's fool. Fans still quote it as the standard Bond-girl introduction, and the series has spent decades both copying and apologising for it.

Bond wakes in Goldfinger (1964) after the laser table, drugged and shipped out of England. A blonde woman is looking down at him. He asks who she is, and she introduces herself as Pussy Galore, pilot to Auric Goldfinger. Bond, played by Sean Connery, smiles and looks away. They are aboard Goldfinger's private plane, crossing the Atlantic to Kentucky. Honor Blackman was cast on the strength of the British TV series The Avengers. Producers briefly considered changing her name to Kitty Galore to placate the censors.
