I don’t swear for the hell of it. Language is a poor enough means of communication. We’ve got to use all the words we’ve got. Besides, there are damn few words anybody understands.

Coarse language gets defended as practical necessity. Every available word matters, the reasoning goes, because communication is already difficult and understanding is already rare. It's an argument that treats profanity not as excess but as one more tool worth keeping in reach.
