Some big hard-boiled egg gets a look at a pretty face and bang--he cracks up and goes sappy.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Carl scoffs that even tough men melt at a pretty face. A big hard-boiled egg is his picture: firm shell, then a crack and a soft, sappy centre. The joke is how quickly toughness gives way.
