I am very, very sneaky, sir.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Turturro plays the butler with a whisper and a bow, and the joke is that he is cheerfully proud of a quality most people would find unnerving. The flat honesty ('very, very sneaky') makes it work as a stand-alone catchphrase. Fans use it whenever someone appears out of nowhere or is caught creeping around.

In Mr. Deeds (2002), small-town pizzeria owner Longfellow Deeds inherits a media empire from his late great-uncle, and is flown to New York. At the dead billionaire's mansion he meets the longtime butler Emilio Lopez, played by John Turturro, who has a habit of appearing silently behind people. When Deeds says he did not hear Emilio coming, Emilio answers calmly that he is very, very sneaky. Deeds says he does not want a servant, but would take a friend, and Emilio agrees. The film, directed by Steven Brill and written by Tim Herlihy, remakes the 1936 Frank Capra film Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.
