I'm looking at your face and I just want to smash it... with a sledgehammer and squeeze it. You're so pretty.

Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The line is a love declaration in the only language Barry has: pent-up violence turned into tenderness. It lands because the film treats him as dangerous and fragile in the same breath, and Lena meets it with a matching threat instead of fear. Fans quote it as the weirdest of romantic lines, 'cute aggression' taken literally.

Spoilers for Punch-Drunk LoveShow the scene
In Punch-Drunk Love (2002), Barry Egan, a lonely novelty-plunger salesman prone to rage, has flown to Hawaii after Lena Leonard, a co-worker of his sister, and she is overjoyed to see him. As they spend time together, the two blurt out affectionate threats: Barry says he looks at her face and wants to smash it with a sledgehammer and squeeze it, because she is so pretty, and Lena answers with her own violent endearments about chewing his face. Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson called it his 'art-house Adam Sandler film', and Sandler won Best Actor at Gijon for it.
