Clubber Lang

Prediction? Pain.

— Rocky III ‧ 1982

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

One word and nothing to argue with. Clubber Lang answers a polite press question with a promise, and Mr. T's glare makes it a threat. It has become the stock reply when someone asks what is coming next in a hard job or a bad week, and fans quote it as the character's signature.

Spoilers for Rocky IIIShow the scene

In Rocky III (1982), the brash contender James 'Clubber' Lang has knocked Rocky out in two rounds to take the heavyweight title. Before the rematch, a television broadcast team asks for predictions on the fight. When the question reaches Lang, he repeats the word 'prediction' and answers with a single word of his own. A commentator then fills in what he means: Lang likes to hurt a man to the body, and Rocky may never have recovered from the knockout.
