Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The hobby quip is the defiance of a man tied to a chair, and the one-word answer is the film's theme: spies, villains and whole institutions coming back from the dead. Both men have been written off and returned, and three short lines say so. It has stuck because it is compact and says exactly what Skyfall is about.

Skyfall (2012). Raoul Silva, a former MI6 agent who blames M for abandoning him, holds Bond captive on his ruined island base. He shows off what he can do with his computers: crash markets, interrupt a spy satellite over Kabul, rig an election in Uganda, all with a point and a click. Bond, unimpressed, observes that everybody needs a hobby. Silva asks what his is, and Bond answers with one word: resurrection. It is the film's joke about his own apparent death in Istanbul, and Silva leads him on through the abandoned city.
