Now you see that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a Star Wars-style villain's creed rewritten as a schoolyard insult, delivered with total confidence by a man who is about to lose. Fans quote it as the funniest possible version of 'evil always wins', and it carries the spoof's whole attitude: the baddies are as dim as everyone else. The line is also a reminder that the hero's power was never in the ring.

Spoilers for SpaceballsShow the scene

The climax of Mel Brooks's Spaceballs (1987) is a duel with Schwartz-powered ring-lightsabers inside the head of Mega-Maid, the giant robot Spaceball One has turned into. Lord Dark Helmet, played by Rick Moranis in an oversized helmet, has taken Lone Starr's ring and dropped it down a grate. He gloats that evil always triumphs because good is dumb, but Yogurt's voice then tells Starr to forget the ring, because the Schwartz is in him, and Starr turns the fight around.
