A tall hooded Jedi in a brown robe, seen from behind, stands in a round council chamber of tall seats before a great arched window full of a glittering city of spires.

Yoda

Hard to see, the dark side is.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Yoda's whole teaching in one inverted sentence: the Sith do not announce themselves, so the Jedi's own certainty is the blind spot. The Council shrugs off the danger in the same scene, which gives the warning its edge. The odd word order made it the most imitated Yoda pattern, and fans use it for anything subtle, hidden or only obvious in hindsight.

On Coruscant, Qui-Gon Jinn asks to speak to the Jedi Council and reports that the assailant who attacked him fought with Jedi training, so the only conclusion left is a Sith lord. A Council member objects that the Sith have been extinct for a thousand years and could not have returned unnoticed. Yoda answers with this line, then the Council promises to unravel the mystery and find the attacker. Qui-Gon stays to report a second discovery: a boy with an extraordinary midi-chlorian count.
