Obi-Wan Kenobi and General Grievous on Utapau, Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Obi-Wan: Hello there! Grievous: General Kenobi!
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Obi-Wan opens a fight against a four-armed cyborg warlord like a man greeting a neighbour over the fence, and the politeness is the joke. Grievous's flustered reply made it a call-and-response that fans now perform in the wild: one says the greeting, another has to answer with the general's name. It became one of the biggest Star Wars memes and a shorthand for dry, unflappable confidence.

Spoilers for Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the SithShow the scene
On Utapau in Revenge of the Sith (George Lucas, 2005), Obi-Wan Kenobi has tracked the Separatist leader General Grievous to Pau City. After the Separatist Council leaves the hangar, Obi-Wan drops down from the catwalk above it and lands among the battle droids. He greets Grievous with a calm "Hello there!" Grievous, startled, replies "General Kenobi!" and adds that Obi-Wan is a bold one. Four IG-100 MagnaGuards close in, Obi-Wan makes short work of them, and Grievous then draws four lightsabers and challenges him to a duel.
