General Zod

Kneel before Zod!

— Superman II  ·  1980

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a villain's entrance line distilled to four words: absolute authority, delivered as a command rather than a threat. Terence Stamp plays Zod with such regal contempt that the demand outlived the film and became the go-to quote for anyone insisting on obedience, whether in a parody or a joke at a meeting. The point of the scene is that Superman will not kneel.

Spoilers for Superman IIShow the scene

Freed from the Phantom Zone and given powers by Earth's yellow sun, General Zod and his companions Ursa and Non take over the White House, and Zod makes the President of the United States kneel. The most famous version comes later: after Lex Luthor tells Zod that Superman is the son of Jor-El, the trio go to the Daily Planet, and Zod, in the street outside, calls out for Superman: "Come to me, son of Jor-El! Kneel before Zod!" Terence Stamp plays Zod in Superman II (1980).
