Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Gentle words from a revenge film's walking corpse, and the film's thesis in six words: grief is weather, and it passes. Fans hold the line close partly because it was spoken in Brandon Lee's last role, and it has become a standard caption for hard times, on memorial pages, tattoos and goth playlists, a quiet counterweight to the film's rain-soaked Detroit.

Spoilers for The CrowShow the scene

In The Crow (1994), Eric Draven, murdered a year earlier and brought back by a crow, pulls Sarah, the girl he and his fiancee once looked after, out of the path of a taxi when she skates into the street. Sarah complains about the rain and says she wishes it would stop just once. Eric answers that it can't rain all the time. When she realises who he is and turns round, he has already vanished. Later she remembers that the words came from a song of his.
