Gollum

It came to me, my own, my love, my precious.

— The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring  ·  2001

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

These few seconds tell you everything about the Ring before the title card is long gone: it is loved the way an addict loves, and it ruins the person who loves it. Bilbo's own 'my precious' at Bag End, minutes later, is the same sickness in a gentler host. 'Precious' became shorthand for obsessive possession, and Gollum's wheedling whisper is the voice people reach for when they hoard something.

Spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the RingShow the scene

Gollum's first appearance is in the film's prologue. As Galadriel narrates how the Ring passed from Isildur, who lost it in a river, to the creature Gollum, the film shows a mountain cave and a murky pool. In the gloom an emaciated figure whispers the line to himself, as if the Ring were a lover. Galadriel adds that it gave him unnatural long life and poisoned his mind for five hundred years, until it abandoned him and was found by Bilbo.
