Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.
— The Shawshank Redemption • 1994
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Red speaks for the institutionalised: hope is a risk, because a man who hopes can break when it is taken away. The film spends two hours proving him half right, and the line is the setup for Andy's closing letter, which turns it around into hope as a good thing. Fans quote it as the cynic's side of the argument, often to be answered with the optimist's.

Spoilers for The Shawshank RedemptionShow the scene
Andy Dufresne has just come out of two weeks in solitary after broadcasting an aria from The Marriage of Figaro over Shawshank's loudspeakers. In the yard he tells Ellis "Red" Redding that music matters because it reminds you the world is not all stone, and that there is something inside nobody can touch. Asked what that is, he says hope. Red answers with this warning, adding that hope has no use on the inside and Andy had better get used to the idea. Andy's reply is a single, pointed question about Brooks, the old librarian who could not survive release.
