Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The pay-off for the title, delivered with Bond at his weakest: tied to a chair, he still gets the last word. A motto that sounds like a boast from anyone else becomes a flat refusal of the one offer Elektra thinks he cannot turn down. Fans quote it for the way a family joke from an earlier film lands as a closer.

In The World Is Not Enough (1999), the climax is in the Maiden's Tower in Istanbul. Elektra King, the oil heiress Bond was sent to protect, is behind the plot, and she has him shackled to an antique chair with a garrote around his neck. She tells him she could have given him the world; Bond answers "The world is not enough," the Bond family motto, Orbis non sufficit. Elektra calls it a foolish sentiment, and his reply is "Family motto." The motto was first seen in On Her Majesty's Secret Service and gave the film its title.
