Our integrity sells for so little, but it is all we really have. It is the very last inch of us.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The film's quietest scene is its most quoted, because a stranger's last words say what an action movie usually shouts. Valerie owns nothing, loses everything, and still draws a line round the one thing nobody can take. It is why the letter is the heart of the story for many viewers, and why people share it far from the mask and the fireworks.

In V for Vendetta (2005), Evey is imprisoned and tortured and told that she can walk free if she gives up the name of V. In her cell she finds a hidden note, written by Valerie Page, an actress sent to a detention centre for being a lesbian and left to die there. Valerie describes her life and what was done to her. She says her integrity is nearly all she has left, the last inch of her, and that within it she is free. Evey reads it and finds the strength to refuse.
