Diana Prince

Only love can truly save the world.

— Wonder Woman  ·  2017

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It reverses the film's opening confidence: Diana began wanting to save the world, and learns that nobody can do it by force, only by choosing better. The line sounds like a greeting card, but the film has earned it with Steve Trevor's sacrifice and her refusal to take revenge. Fans quote it as the character's creed.

Spoilers for Wonder WomanShow the scene

The line comes from Diana's voice-over at the end of Wonder Woman (2017). In 1918 she has just spared Doctor Maru and destroyed Ares after realising, through her memory of Steve Trevor, that humans have goodness in them, and the team has celebrated the end of the war. In the present day she sends Bruce Wayne an email thanking him for the photograph of her and Steve. Over it she repeats the narration that opened the film, now changed to end: she learned that every person holds both light and darkness, and that only love can truly save the world.
