We say we waste time, but that is impossible. We waste ourselves.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The familiar complaint about wasting time is redirected toward the person living through it. Time continues regardless, so the loss is framed as a loss of one’s own life or possibilities. That change of subject makes an everyday phrase more personal and harder to dismiss.
