Almost nothing quoted as 'Buddha' online appears in the Pali Canon, the earliest record of his teaching. Fake Buddha Quotes -- a whole research site -- documents hundreds of New Age lines wrongly attributed to him. Genuine material (the Dhammapada is the most quotable source) was transmitted orally for centuries before being written down, so even the real thing is a community's memory, not a transcript.
