The lights were off so that his heads could avoid looking at each other, because neither of them was currently a particularly engaging sight, and nor had they been since he had made the error of looking into his soul.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The narrator jokes that a many-headed man keeps the lights off so his heads needn't look at each other. Neither is a pleasant sight, a condition dating from his mistake of examining his own soul. The humour is dry, deadpan and self-lacerating.
