'The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places' is real Hemingway -- A Farewell to Arms, 1929. His two most famous 'quotes', though, are not his: 'Write drunk, edit sober' belongs to the novelist Peter De Vries, and the six-word baby-shoes story was a newspaper legend decades before it was pinned on him. His actual style survives quotation badly -- the force lives in the rhythm of whole passages, which is why the fakes are always tidy aphorisms.
Do not start blaming who you love, or apportioning guilt, for it will all be apportioned in good time, and not by you.
