A superior pilot uses his superior judgment to avoid situations which require the use of his superior skill.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The speaker values judgment that prevents dangerous situations above skill used to escape them. Repeating 'superior' gives the maxim its neat structure: the best ability may show itself in never needing a spectacular rescue. Good decisions make demanding displays of technique less necessary.
