We are not asking for superiority for we have always had that; all we ask is equality.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The speaker claims superiority already belongs to the group represented by we, while asking only for equality. The contrast turns an apparently modest demand into a bold boast. Its wit comes from presenting equal treatment as the limited request of people who consider themselves entitled to more.
