Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the most shareable four words in open-source history: a founder losing patience with a hardware giant that shipped closed drivers and left Linux users to cope. The gesture made it a meme, a T-shirt and a rallying cry for anyone who wants vendors to play fair with free software. It also shows the blunt style that Torvalds' fans love and his critics debate.

On 14 June 2012 Linus Torvalds joined an interview panel at Aalto University in Finland, then took questions from the audience. Asked about hardware makers and Linux, he called Nvidia the single worst company the kernel developers had ever dealt with, raised his middle finger and delivered the line. The clip spread fast and Nvidia answered publicly soon after. Torvalds was voicing a long-running complaint about how the company handled open-source support for its graphics chips.
