Original artwork, not a still

Rebecca West

A copy of the universe is not what is required of art; one of the damned things is ample.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The statement rejects imitation as art’s necessary purpose. Calling one universe enough turns a serious aesthetic position into an impatient joke: simply producing another version would be redundant. The line leaves room for art to do something other than duplicate what already exists.
