Video games are bad for you? That's what they said about rock and roll.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke is that every new medium gets a panic, and rock and roll got there first. Putting it in the mouth of a game designer who likes bluegrass makes it sound like a shrug from the inside. It circulates in arguments about game violence and screen time because it is short and funny, with no source behind it.

This line is routinely credited to Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario and Zelda, but no original interview, date or publication has turned up. Wikipedia repeats it in the personal-life section of his biography as something he has been "quoted as stating", next to his taste for guitar, mandolin, banjo and bluegrass, and Wikiquote's sourced page of his remarks does not carry it. It is best treated as a popular attribution, not a confirmed quotation.
