Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It sounds like King's whole career in two sentences: the horror in his books is rarely the thing under the bed, it is the damage people carry around inside. That is why it fits so well as a quote card and why it keeps being shared as his. Its pedigree is shaky, though, and most of its fame comes from a crime drama quoting it.

This line travels under Stephen King's name and is usually pinned to The Shining, but no page reference has turned up. Wikiquote files a slightly different wording under its Shining heading ("Monsters are real. Ghosts are too") with no page number. It is best known from TV: in the Criminal Minds season four episode "Conflicted", Spencer Reid delivers it as one of the episode's two quotations, introducing it as something King wrote. The wording on the site is the Criminal Minds version.
