Tori Amos

Somebody will come backstage and go, 'You saved me.' And I will have to say, 'Stop right there. You saved yourself.'

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The speaker imagines someone offering thanks for being saved, then firmly returns the credit to that person. The correction places agency with the listener rather than the figure they admire. It allows gratitude while refusing the role of sole rescuer in somebody else's story.
