Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
A wizard who has spent the film being gentle and a little vague steps forward and becomes the wall between his friends and the dark. The sacrifice is why fans still say it, whether blocking a doorway, a pull request or a queue.

Spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the RingShow the scene
In The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), the Fellowship is fleeing the Balrog through the Mines of Moria. Gandalf turns to face the demon alone. He tells it he is a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor, and that the dark fire will not help it, then shouts the line. The bridge breaks under the Balrog, but its whip catches Gandalf's heel; he gasps "Fly, you fools!" and falls into the chasm, leaving the Fellowship devastated.
