Morning, Starbuck. What do you hear? / Nothin' but the rain, sir. / Grab your gun and bring the cat in.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The call-and-response is the private ritual of a commander and the pilot he half-adopted, and its nonsense is the point: it tells you instantly that these two have a bond beyond rank. Because the chant is never explained, fans filled in meanings of their own and the line became the series' recurring password.

The exchange is an early scene of the 2003 Battlestar Galactica miniseries, Part 1. Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) is jogging through the corridors of the battlestar Galactica when Commander Adama (Edward James Olmos) greets her. Starbuck answers in rhythm, and after Adama's third line she shouts back "Boom boom boom". Writer Ron Moore later said it was modelled on a military jody cadence, and that he deliberately never wrote the whole chant out.
