The Fourth Doctor

It's the end... but the moment has been prepared for.

— Doctor Who  ·  1963

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

For a Doctor who spent seven years joking his way through the universe, it is a quiet, almost cheerful farewell: he is not afraid, and the ending was planned all along. The line is the show's most quoted regeneration speech from the classic era, and the Watcher's reveal changed how fans thought of regeneration. It is still the line people reach for when a story, a job or an era comes to a gentle end.

Spoilers for Doctor WhoShow the scene

These are the Fourth Doctor's last words, at the end of "Logopolis" (season 18, 1981), Tom Baker's final story. Having cut the power cable on the Pharos Project radio telescope in Sussex to stop the Master, the Doctor has fallen from the tilted gantry, and lies dying as visions of his old companions pass before him. Surrounded by Adric, Nyssa, Tegan and the Brigadier, he smiles and says the line, then a pale figure, the Watcher, who has trailed him all story, steps forward and merges with him. Nyssa says the Watcher was the Doctor all along, and the Fifth Doctor wakes smiling.
