I am a golden god!

— It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia • 2005

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Dennis's self-image in four words: the handsome, untouchable alpha that the rest of the world keeps declining to see. The shout lands because the audience knows how little it matches reality, and it is funniest at the exact moment he loses control. The line was already famous from Almost Famous, so fans hear both the film and Dennis's delusion at once.

Dennis shouts that he is a golden god in "The High School Reunion Part 2: The Gang's Revenge" (FX, 15 December 2011, written by Glenn Howerton and Rob McElhenney). At the reunion, his plan to sleep with Tim Murphy's wife Christie collapses when she tells him she thought he was gay. He rages that he is the king of the mountaintop who reigns supreme in the school, and later screams the golden god line again after the gang find the hidden compartment of tools in his car. He returns to the idea in the season 10 episode "The Gang Misses the Boat" (2015). The phrase was made famous by Almost Famous (2000), where Billy Crudup's rock star Russell Hammond shouts it before jumping into a pool.
