Well, excuse me, Princess!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Link as a cocky teenage snark, a far cry from the silent hero of the games. The catchphrase turned the cartoon into a cult item, and gamers now use it in a tone of mock offence whenever someone shoots down a suggestion. It also stands for how strange the early Zelda spin-offs were before the series settled on a quiet Link.

The line is Link's catchphrase from the 1989 animated Legend of Zelda cartoon, which aired as a Friday segment of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! from September 1989. It is not from Link: The Faces of Evil. Link, voiced by Jonathan Potts, says some form of it to Princess Zelda whenever the two bicker, and Wikipedia counts 29 uses across the 13 episodes. Writer Bob Forward has said it was based on a Steve Martin comedy routine, and that he put it in every episode to poke fun at a studio executive who had forced him to use it.
