GRIFFITH!

— Berserk ‧ 1997

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

One word carries the whole betrayal. Guts has spent the series trying to be Griffith's equal, and the cry is rage, grief and disbelief at once. It is the last scream of the series' climax and the sound fans most associate with the 1997 anime, shouted back as a joke, a chant and a lament, and the name Guts spends the rest of the story hunting.

Berserk (1997 anime), episode 25, "Time of Eternity", the series finale. During the Eclipse, the Band of the Falcon has been sacrificed and the God Hand announces that Griffith has been reborn as the demon Femto. Guts, with an arm trapped in an apostle's jaws, watches Griffith beckon Casca over. He hacks the arm off and sprints for them, screaming his former friend's name, but winged apostles slam him to the ground. The screen goes white, and a post-credits scene shows Guts leaving Godot's house in black armour to begin his revenge.
