I'd rather fight for my life than live it.
— Berserk ‧ 1997
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It is Guts's creed: a life that is only endured is not worth much, and he would rather be in the fight, even a losing one, than sit safe. The anime's story turns on exactly that choice. It has long been shared as a motivational line, though the real Berserk it comes from is a bleak, bloody dark fantasy.

Spoilers for BerserkShow the scene
The line is credited to Guts, the mercenary of Kentaro Miura's Berserk, and appears in the 1997 anime (25 episodes, October 1997 to March 1998) that adapts the Black Swordsman opening and the Golden Age arc of the manga. It sums up why Guts, a swordsman born on a battlefield, leaves the Band of the Hawk to find his own dream rather than serve Griffith's. Episode 19, Separation, covers his departure and the duel with Griffith.
