Vegeta

I am the prince of all Saiyans!

— Dragon Ball Z · 1989

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Vegeta's whole identity is in the title: a prince without a kingdom, a warrior who is only royalty because he says so. He uses it to puff up his pride in front of Goku, Frieza and everyone else, and it is the first thing fans reach for when they want to quote him. It later turns tragic and funny as he softens into a husband and father, yet he never lets the title go.

Spoilers for Dragon Ball ZShow the scene

Vegeta is introduced as the last prince of the Saiyans, the proud warrior race Frieza destroyed along with their planet. His full anime appearance comes in the Saiyan Saga episode "Gohan's Rage", after a cameo in "Reunions", and the manga introduces him in "The Needs of the Many". From the start he insists on the title "Prince of all Saiyans" and keeps repeating it, even while serving Frieza as an underling. The wiki notes he never calls himself "King", possibly out of respect for his father, King Vegeta, or because he refused to admit the Saiyans were gone.
