Spirit Bomb!

— Dragon Ball Z ‧ 1989

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The Spirit Bomb is the series' answer to hopeless odds: Goku cannot win alone, so he borrows a little strength from everyone and everything. Shouting the name is Dragon Ball ritual, with arms raised, and it is the line most associated with Goku's pleas for the planet to lend him energy. It also became the shorthand for any desperate last move that needs the whole crowd behind it.

Spoilers for Dragon Ball ZShow the scene

The Spirit Bomb (Genki Dama in Japanese) is Goku's biggest technique, an energy sphere gathered from every living thing around him. King Kai teaches it to Goku in Other World in Dragon Ball Z episode 21, "Counting Down"; in the manga it debuts in the chapter "Closer... Closer...". Against Vegeta, Goku gathers one and Krillin throws it, and the famous call comes on Namek, when Frieza is beating the Z Fighters and Goku, exhausted after Kaio-ken times twenty, raises his hands to gather the energy while Piccolo, Gohan and Krillin hold Frieza off. The matching episode is titled "The Final Trump Card! Goku's Ultimate Spirit Bomb!". It wounds Frieza badly but does not kill him.
