Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the show's tidy one-sentence explanation of one of anime's best-loved powers: a fighter who can stretch, stick and snap back anything he touches, and who named it after a sweet. Fans quote it because it sums up Hisoka's whole sly, playful menace: a deadly ability with a toy-shop name, and the reason people still ask when he stuck it on you.

Spoilers for Hunter x HunterShow the scene

In episode 32 of the 2011 Hunter x Hunter, "A Surprising Win", Hisoka has just torn through the Heavens Arena fighter Kastro in a bout that cost him both arms. Afterwards a woman waits in the exit tunnel: Machi of the Phantom Troupe, making her debut, who sews his arms back on with Nen thread. To hide the damage, Hisoka attaches a scarf with Bungee Gum and layers fake skin over it with Texture Surprise, and Machi explains how the first trick works. Hisoka adds that he named it after his favourite chewing gum as a child.
