You should enjoy the little detours to the fullest. Because that's where you'll find the things more important than what you want.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

After a series spent chasing a father who never wanted to be found, Ging hands Gon the thing he actually came to say: the point was never the finish line. It works as the series' farewell and as general life advice, and fans quote it at graduations, at project ends and over any long slog.

Spoilers for Hunter x HunterShow the scene

It comes at the very end of the 2011 Hunter x Hunter series: episode 148, "Past x And x Future", which first aired on 24 September 2014. Gon has climbed the World Tree and finally talks heart to heart with his father Ging at the summit. Ging tells him how he founded a group to reach a hidden royal tomb at fifteen, and how the best part was the friends who shared the search rather than the secrets inside. He says he is in no hurry to enter the Dark Continent because he is enjoying the journey, and offers this advice. Gon then returns his Hunter License, and the two swap stories.
