Amuro Ray

Even my father never hit me!

— Mobile Suit Gundam · 1979

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Amuro's cry is the voice of a teenager who has never been disciplined, and Bright's answer is the series' statement that war forces children to grow up. Fans know it as the Bright Slap, one of anime's most parodied moments, and the line is the standard comeback for anyone who complains about being corrected.

Spoilers for Mobile Suit GundamShow the scene

In episode 9 of Mobile Suit Gundam, "Fly! Gundam" (June 2, 1979), a worn-out Amuro Ray refuses to pilot the Gundam as Garma Zabi's forces attack White Base. Captain Bright Noa storms into his room, drags him from his bed and punches him; Amuro asks how he could hit him, and Bright calls him a spoiled brat. Bright then slaps him, Amuro swears he will never pilot the Gundam again, and Bright's words and Fraw Bow's offer to fly it herself bring Amuro back to the hangar.
