The chant of the Principality of Zeon, ending Gihren Zabi's funeral eulogy for Garma in Mobile Suit Gundam, episode 12, 'The Threat of Zeon' (1979)

Sieg Zeon!

— Mobile Suit Gundam  ·  1979

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the sound of a regime working: a dictator takes a family death and turns it into a national movement in one speech. Fans know it as the show's villain salute and one of the most imitated chants in anime. The words and raised arm show up in parodies, other Gundam series and fan gatherings, a reminder that Zeon's villains were written with real charisma.

Spoilers for Mobile Suit GundamShow the scene

The chant closes Gihren Zabi's eulogy for his youngest brother Garma in episode 12 of Mobile Suit Gundam, "The Threat of Zeon" (first aired in Japan 23 June 1979). A huge crowd gathers in Zum City for Garma's state funeral. Gihren, who pushed for a public funeral to turn the loss into morale, tells the broadcast audience to turn their grief into rage and calls the people of Zeon the chosen ones. He ends with "Sieg Zeon" (Japanese for roughly Hail Zeon), and the crowd takes it up. Amuro and the White Base crew watch it on screen as the episode ends, with the cries still echoing.
