Saitama

I'm just a guy who's a hero for fun.

— One-Punch Man ‧ 2015

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the series' joke and thesis in one sentence: a man so strong that heroism is a hobby, facing an enemy with a grand speech who gets a shrug in reply. The line also sets up Saitama's arc, since he later registers as a professional hero only after realising nobody recognises him as one. Fans reach for it whenever someone does something astonishing with no fuss.

Spoilers for One-Punch ManShow the scene

The first episode opens in A-City, where a monster has beaten the heroes Lightning Max and Smile Man and is about to kill a girl. Saitama, a bald man in a yellow jumpsuit with a cape and red gloves, arrives in time to save her. The monster introduces itself as Vaccine Man and says it exists to wipe out humankind for polluting the Earth. Saitama introduces himself with the line, and a moment later Vaccine Man, grown into a giant, goes down to a single punch. Saitama then screams in frustration at how easy it was.
