Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke of One-Punch Man is that every fight ends in one punch, so the series needed a bigger punch for the one fight where it matters. Serious Punch is that: the same hero, the same bored face, and for the first time a real problem. The name has become the standard joke for any sudden escalation, and fans say it with the same flat voice as Saitama.

Spoilers for One-Punch ManShow the scene

The Serious Punch is the first of Saitama's "serious" moves in One-Punch Man (Madhouse, 2015), the Killer Move: Serious Series, and it comes in the first season's finale, episode 12. Boros, self-styled Dominator of the Universe, has arrived above A-City looking for a worthy opponent. He survives Saitama's ordinary punch, tears off his restraining armour, and finally fires his Collapsing Star Roaring Cannon at the planet. Saitama throws a Serious Punch that cancels the blast and critically wounds Boros. The series then reuses it: against the Elder Centipede, against Evil Natural Water, and in the Serious Punch squared against Garou.
